Rufus Scientific - company creation and interim management

Rufus Scientific is about seeing where the exciting developments of the future lie, and finding ways to exploit them. 'If you are so clever, why are you not doing it for yourself?' is the usual response to such claims. Well, we do. William Bains, Rufus founder and principal, has been intimately involved in creating companies to exploit outstanding science and technological opportunities for a decade. Below are some past and current involvements

Ark Therapeutics Ltd.

Ark was founded by Merlin Biosciences in 1998. William was the principle member of the Merlin team writing the Series A business plan, and remained on the company's scientific advisory board through 2000. Ark floated in March 2004.

ReNeuron Ltd
.
ReNeuron was another of the companies founded by Merlin. William identified ReNeuron's core technology - neural stem cells - as a major new area of science at a time when the concept was considered too 'science fiction' for commercial exploitation. ReNeuron floated in 2001..

Amedis Pharmaceuticals
William founded Amedis Pharmaceuticals in 2000, and was interim CEO/CSO until the end of 2001. The company discovers new drugs based on silicon chemistry, a scientifically radical idea William identified in 1998 as having a major commercial opportunity. William took the company through seed and Series A financing, recruitment of a management team, filing of initial patents, setting up the first R&D programmes and closing the Company's first pharmaceutical collaboration before leaving his executive role at the end of 2002. William remains on the SAB.

Delta G Ltd
Delta G is a new venture set up in 2003 to exploit higly innovative science in bioenergetics - the understanding of how organisms generate energy from food - and how they are related to diseases of ageing. Delta G is a 'systems biology' company, moving beyond our understanding of biology from the genome era. It was founded by William Bains, who is interim CEO. of the company.

Choracle
Choracle was founded in 2003 to build software to predict the biological properties of chemicals, and is developing an initial product suite aimed at predicting chemicals' toxicity. Choracle aims to be a profitable company by the end of 2005 - a rarity in 'biotech'! Rufus provides scientific data and interim management to Choracle.
